No lie has captured recent national attention as dramatically as the “Big Lie”—the false allegation that the 2020 election was stolen from then-President Trump. That lie fueled the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and has raised serious concerns about future political violence. On August 1, 2023, President Trump was indicted on federal conspiracy and obstruction charges for his attempts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election. His criminal actions, the indictment asserts, built off of his “pervasive and destabilizing lies about election fraud.” Trump’s counsel has argued that the indictment is “an attack on ‘free speech.’” Full Article.
