Write-On Competition

Write-On Competition

Students are invited to join the Arizona State Law Journal based on their Write-On Competition score until thirty-five students have accepted invitations. The Write-On Competition is held immediately following the end of the spring semester and has two components: a closed-universe memorandum and a Bluebook citation quiz. All Write-On Candidates are graded anonymously using ASU Exam Numbers.

Scoring. The breakdown for the Write-On Competition score is 45% grade point average (“GPA”) through spring, 25% closed memorandum, 25% citation quiz, and 5% Legal Method & Writing and Legal Advocacy grades.

Bluebook Citation Quiz. The Bluebook citation quiz operates like a conventional round of cite-checking with approximately 150 to 200 footnotes. Candidates must have a copy of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (22nd ed. 2025) and correct each footnote according to its rules.

Closed-Universe MemorandumDuring the Write-On Competition, Candidates will be required to write a memorandum based on the facts and legal authorities provided. The memorandum should only include the following four sections: Issue(s) Presented, Brief Answer(s), Discussion, and Conclusion. The Write-On Committee will also provide Candidates with detailed instructions for completing the memorandum.
