Arizona State Law Journal Forum Student Writing Competition
The Arizona State Law Journal Forum invites all Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law students to participate in our inaugural Student Writing Competition. This competition offers students the opportunity to publish timely, accessible legal scholarship in Forum, Arizona State Law Journal’s online companion publication dedicated to concise analyses of current legal issues.
Whether you’ve developed an exceptional paper for a writing course or independently explored a timely legal issue, we encourage you to submit your work for consideration. Publishing in Forum will allow you to showcase your legal research and writing skills, contribute to an evolving or undeveloped area of law, and build your professional portfolio.
Winning submissions will receive an offer of publication in the Forum’s Spring 2027 Issue, subject to Forum’s standard editorial process and publication agreement.
Eligibility
The Student Writing Competition is open to all 2L and 3L students enrolled at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
***Interested 1L students who wish to submit must contact the Forum Editor for prior approval.***
Students may adapt papers from seminar classes, independent studies, or other academic work for publication. If part of a journal, 2Ls generally may not submit work produced as part of their ongoing Note and Comment—please ask your senior Note & Comment staff for your journal’s specific policy. 3L students may reach out to the Forum Editor if they wish to submit an unpublished Note or Comment.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be:
- Approximately 3,000–6,000 words in length, including footnotes.
- Focused on a timely, novel, or developing legal issue.
- Original, unpublished work.
- Substantially aligned with the twenty-second edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation and use footnotes.
- Well-researched, well-supported, and well-written.
- Anonymized. To anonymize your work, please remove your name, the typical acknowledgments footnote, and any other identifying information, including the document’s metadata.
- In word (docx, .doc, or .dotx) format.
Forum especially welcomes essays that cite, engage with, or build upon scholarship or legal topics recently published in the Arizona State Law Journal.
Use of Generative AI
Consistent with Arizona State Law Journal’s policies, authors may use generative AI tools for brainstorming, outlining, or researching only. Generative AI may not be used for substantive drafting or editing. Authors must disclose the extent to which they used AI in the submission form.
Submission Deadlines
Submissions will remain open from August 31, 2026 through November 2, 2026.
